Project: Re-Evaluation of the most appropriate alignment for a bicycle pedestrian facility through the northern end of Shelburne Village
Description: Broadreach Planning & Design is completing a reanalysis of the most appropriate alignment for a bicycle and pedestrian facility that will connect the northern Shelburne neighborhoods with the Village Center and the Shelburne Community School. A previous study identified an alignment that used a portion of the railroad right-of-way for a rails-with trails solution. While the railroad initially accepted the concept, they subsequently deferred on their support, thus requiring the reanalysis.
Options that have been addressed with this reanalysis include routing a shared use path under the existing railroad bridge, tunneling under the railroad tracks, and adding sidewalks and bicycle lanes to busy Route 7. Shelburne residents reviewed the options at several additional public work sessions and concluded that the original alignment that used the railroad right-of-way was still most appropriate. Recognizing that it could take several years to convince the railroad to cooperate, the study is also including a recommendation to create an interim solution of wider paved shoulders and sidewalks on Route 7 to provide at least some level of service for bicyclists and pedestrians.
During the course of the analysis of the various alignments, Broadreach Planning & Design met with State and Town officials as well as representatives from the railroad. They also worked with Wilbur Smith Associates to prepare numerous special graphic maps that provided information on different aspects of the Study Area.
